Smart home, as the application and extention of Internet of Things(Io T) in home and the future life style, is currently one of the hottest research topics. Smart home gateway plays an extremely important role in smart home systems, and its main function is to build a home network, as well as data exchange and protocol conversion between external network and home network. Smart home gateway is used to control and manage the home devices in remote-range or short-range and it is the core component of smart home system.In this paper, we introduce and analyze the development history and trends of smart home in detail. To solve some shortcomings in current smart home system, such as specificity, cost and individuation, a design method is proposed. On the basis of Io T structure, the method is combined with embedded technology, Internet technology, WIFI communication technology, Zig Bee communication technology and sensor technology. The main research contents are described as follows:(1) On the basis of Io T architecture, a three-layer structure of smart home is proposed, which is combined of sense-control layer, network-communication layer, and application-server layer. Focusing on the analys is of the function of smart home gateway in smart home system, a hardware system of smart home gateway is designed on the basis of embendded processor module, combined with network interface module, Wi Fi module, and Zig Bee module.(2) On the basis of Open Wrt, an operating system, the software system of smart home gateway is designed. User programs, such as local server, remote-communication interface, are developed by means of a modular method. By using APP, users can control the home devices and get the home informations in short-range or remote-range. To enhance the security of the system, a certification process between clients and smart home gateways is designed by using NTRU algorithm.(3) The composion and characteristics of Zig Bee network is researched and analyzed. Zig Bee home network with star-structure is designed. The Zig Bee program of network management and device information acquisition is developed on the basis of Z-Stack 2007, by which the gateway can manage and control the terminal devices, and collect their informations. By taking advantages of Zig Bee network in terms of networking power consumption and Wi Fi in terms of communication stability, a home network, combined by Zig Bee and Wi Fi, is constructed.(4) A personalization program of intelligent home gateway is designed. By using "role-mechanism", users are divided into parent-users, child-users, and visitor-users. By identifying the user’s identity, smart home gateway provides different functions and services for different users.At last, by connecting the server and the mobile client, we test and analyze the functions of the gateway. The test result shows that the smart home gateway can be applied to most of the home environments. In this way, we can get home information and control home devices, which is intelligent and convenient to our life. Our developed system has the advantages of low power consumption, good stability, lower cost, smaller size and perfect functions.
