The function of the smart home system in developed countries has been improved to be a helping hand for household recently, but the high price makes the market future of this technology in developing countries like China not very promising. In China, the smart homes are supplied by various manufacturers in domestic market according to many different standards, lacking of a unified industry standard makes the things even worse. Therefore, at present there is an urgent need for a low cost, low-power and standardized smart home system for the potential low-end customers in China.A design method of a smart home system is proposed based on ARM and Zigbee. The system is developed with Qt in Ubuntu, using C++ language code. First of all, the overall structure of the smart home system has been designed. The system is planned for the two part of the front-end Zigbee wireless sensor network and the back-end ARM gateway in the topology of system. The function modules and workflow of the system are planned in the software structure. Secondly, the security alarm module has been designed and implemented, and the smokescope is detected by a smoke sensor in it. If the smokescope exceeds the threshold, an alarm will be triggered. It is detected by a hall sensor whether the doors and windows are illegally opened or not. If it is illegally opened, an alarm will be triggered. Thirdly, the lighting module has been designed and implemented, and it is detected by an infrared sensor in this module whether there is anybody at home or not. And the light will be turned on for the person in the house, and turned off if nobody is left. Light or darkness is detected by a light sensor. If the light is turning dim, the light will be turned on automatically and curtain is closed, as well. On the opposite, if room is bright enough, the light will be turned off, and the curtain will be opened. The design and implement of the temperature and humidity control module are described at the final part. As a set of temperature and humidity sensor is used to detect the domestic environment, the air-conditioning and humidifier will be working under the control of smart house system accordingly.In the end, this paper puts up an economical smart home system for low-end customers, by realizing the automation of household appliance, to upgrade the safety, convenience and comfort of ordinary users’ domestic life.
