Vernacular landscape is an important type of cultural landscape, as it shows manual intervention in natural environment. The diversity of regional vernacular landscape originates from different manual interventions adapting to different geographical environment.With vernacular landscape in Fuyang County Zhejiang Province established as studying object, this dissertation defines vernacular landscape as a composite system formed by ecology, production and life subsystems. Literature synthesis, field investigation, qualitative research and graphic analysis are employed to prosecute an analysis on vernacular landscape evolution and spatial pattern at the village level from the perspective of landscape architecture disciplinary. This study emphasizing on regional characteristics and traditional ways of manual intervention provides the basis for the further localization development of vernacular landscape in Fuyang County and enriches the research content of vernacular landscape.Firstly, the preindustrial evolution of vernacular landscape is reviewed, which results in the conclusion that the specific ways of manual intervention adapt to nature and the vernacular landscape elements include natural landscape, water conservancy landscape, agricultural landscape, settlement landscape and humanistic landscape.Secondly, vernacular landscape spatial pattern could be divided into 4 typical types according to the results of the sample survey that manual intervention and spatial pattern have common characteristics and law in the similar geographical environment. This illustrates the effective combination of different ways of manual intervention adapting to geographical environment.Finally, the practical experience on the protection of vernacular landscape elements and spatial pattern and the experience on inheritance of traditional manual intervention are summed up, which could offer reference strategies for vernacular landscape further development in the process of new-type urbanization.
