Study On The Vernacular Landscape Of Old Dam Irrigation Districts In Lishui

Development of agriculture is closely related to the building of irrigation projects.The irrigation districts of a weirs or a dam("Yan")makes up the basic living environment unit during Agricultural Cultivation Period.The wisdom in the planning of those areas cover a wide rage,from irrigation of farmland,daily use of water,flood prevention and drought control,to the layout of towns and cities.Form a perspective of landscape architecture,the irrigation districts of old dams take on a kind of special vernacular landscape.The activities of building dams and arranging water is the process in which people interfere in nature evolution.During that,the raw nature was converted into a composite landscape of natural,half-natural and artificial landscape,which is still changing under the interaction of different elements.With studying objects focused on the old dam irrigation districts in Lishui,Zhejiang Province,this dissertation take them as a compound system of nature-based landscape,hydraulic landscape,farmland texture,settlement landscape and the operating mechanism of water management,with effects in ecology,production and living.The studied old dam irrigation districts differs in scale and the number of dams it contains.Using methods of data analysis,literature synthesis,case study,mapping analysis and field investigation,it analyzed the composition of vernacular landscape elements and the spatial distribution features of old dam irrigation districts.Firstly,to analyze the specific ways of manual intervention during the changing of vernacular landscape in old-dam areas before Industrialization,got the summary of the composition of physical landscape elements and related cultural landscape elements.Secondly,through field investigation and case study,samples of old dam irrigation districts were chosen to show the differed regional features,village patterns,ways of manual interventions and the composition of spatial pattern of landscape,based on which,general universality of water irrigation system,intervention of the nature,spatial pattern and the water management was clarified.Finally,under the background of urbanization process in Lishui,several typical cases were studied to analyze the influence factors the new-type urbanization put on old dam areas.As well as clarifying the wisdom of forming an irrigation district and to learn from it,this dissertation discussed ways to protect the spatial pattern of its vernacular landscape,preserve its special landscape appearance and help them adopt the on-going urbanization.
