Low grade roads in our country, such as mountainous area roads, have huge mileages, low linear indicators, especially curves which is one of the main road lines. Due to complex road conditions, drivers could produce psychological pressure and driving fatigue, which will impact the receiving and processing of the road environment information. Curve section is the main area of traffic accidents, and has grim situation of traffic safety. After transfering road environmental information to the brain center by visual system, driver feedbacks speed, acceleration and direction to vehicle via moving organs to ensure driving safety. The process reflects the driver’s visual & behavioral characteristics, which are the most important characteristics of driver. Visual characteristics directly affect the driver on the road environment information acquisition, and behavioral characteristics directly affect the driver’s control of the vehicle. Both of them directly determine the safety of the driving process, so the study of driver’s visual & behavioral characteristics is necessary to clear formation mechanism of road traffic accidents, improve road traffic environment and prevent accidents. This paper does research of the truck driver’s visual & behavioral characteristics on curve section of mountain road on the basis of summarizing related research results at home and abroad.Through analyzing experimental data, this paper reveals the load generating mechanism of driver, gets the driver’s cognitive rules and visual & behavioral characteristics and then provides theoretical basis for identifying truck lateral safety status. The specific research contents of this paper are as follows:1) Based on the visual & behavioral characteristics of truck driver,a real truck experiment was carried out on X165 county road of Baishan, Jilin Province to collect the driver’s eye movement data and physiological data, using of eye tracker, physiological recorder, handheld GPS, tachograph and other equipments, and to record operating parameters of the truck by real-time.2) Through analyzing a large number of experimental data, this paper gets a quantitative description of the driver’s behavioral and visual characteristics varying with the changes of bend radius. This paper uses the ANOVA method to explore whether the direction and obstructions of curve section will have an impact on the driver’s visual & behavioral characteristics, then expands research conclusions, carrys out a research on speed limit value and speed limit sign placing distance in mountain curves and puts forward a reasonable improvement suggestion.3) The driver’s behavioral characteristics directly shows in the change of vehicle speed, acceleration and direction, so this paper refines the process of the truck through curve section of mountain road and conducts a detailed study of change regularities of truck’s speed and acceleration in different curve radius. Then a method of dividing the truck’s running state according to its longitudinal acceleration characteristics was achieved and based on it this paper studys in detail about driver’s visual characteristics, such as fixation characteristics, changes in pupil diameter, scanning characteristics and other parameters’ changing rules in the whole process. The conclusions of this paper can complement current defects of truck driver’s visual & behavioral cognitive on curve section of mountain road. At the same time, it can make up the deficiencies of the existing design specifications on speed limit value and speed limit sign placing distance in mountain curves and provide a certain theoretical basis for the improvement of design specifications.
