Ship domain, as an important part of the ship’s behavior, exists objectively. Researches on ship domain is the needs to ensure the maritime traffic safety and the efficiency improvement. Automatic Identification System (AIS for short) can get real-time and uninterrupted shipping information automatically, which has reliable source, high precision and large quantity. Compared to other data acquisition method AIS is more efficient and convenient. The ship domain model based on restricted waters developed by specific waters channel condition, vessel density factors has certain limitation in application. Making full use of AIS information to research ship domain in open waters seem to be very necessary. Based on above research background, this paper has carried out the following research work:1. Propose a method to determine ship domain, which base on the calculation of relative ship position, the use of single ship superposition and milti-ship superposition.2. Set conditions for center ship and surrounding ship according to ship type and ship scale and then calculate ship domain under different conditions by statistical method based on large quantity of AIS data. Detail the variety of ship domain.3. Statistical analysis on different types of ship domain and further research on the impact of ship type and ship scale on ship domain. This article is based on large quantity of AIS data to research ship domain in open waters, which has strong objectivity and universality. It can provide important data basis for further research and application of ship domain, provides data support for automatic collision avoidance, and has a certain practical reference value to the traffic capacity, navigation ability and safety evaluation.
