The Investigation In The Preservation And Renewal Of Coastal Historic Block Of Qingdao Bay

As a particular form of coastal space, coastal historic blocks, including two elements- the historic blocks and the coasts, are the most characteristic places with local context in urban waterfront. However, it is inevitable for the historic blocks to confront the issues including aging of the physical structure and recession of vitality. There are various controversies between the constant development of the waterfront and the protection for the historic blocks. If solely developing the waterfront, thus large numbers of historic conservation areas will be disappeared, causing a loss of urban characteristics. If only operating static protection, it will also lead to economically backward and commercial depression. The final result of the two situations above are both that the blocks wane. Therefore, how to seek for appropriate balance between the conservation and the development has been the issue about which the urban designers need to think currently.The region of Qingdao Bay has been called "Qian hai yan’er" which was fully filled with colonial culture. Along with the development of the city, the scape of Qingdao Bay changed constantly. The urban construction of Qingdao expanded rapidly after the reform and opening-up. The government was committed to the development of the new eastern area and moved the administrative centre to the east, which directly led to the relative lag development of Qingdao Bay. Coupled with the aging of the physical structure, the abundant historical and cultural connotations of Qingdao Bay were also ignored. The protection and development of the coastal historic blocks should be a dynamic concept. The viable solution to the problem of coastal historic blocks was that searching for a sustainable development status with vigour and vitality restored on the premise of ensuring the continuation of the physical structure in the coastal historic blocks itself.Mainly targeted at the coastal historic blocks of Qingdao Bay, this essay, initially, analysed and compared the relevant theories and cases which were also regarded as the theoretical basis and the experience reference for further investigation and research. Moreover, it researched thoroughly about several aspects of the coastal historic blocks of Qingdao Bay. These aspects included historical development, spatial evolution, spatial structures of districts, district scale, district scenes as well as the region’s buildings in terms of their ages, nature, quality, materials, colours, heights and so on. Also, it made an integrated evaluation for the value of the historical buildings. Finally, based on the research of the above, the essay found the development value of the blocks and the reasonable protection and development proposals by summarizing the existing strengths and weaknesses of the blocks and being associated with the current trend of internationalization in the coastal historic blocks. Thus, hopefully, some positive effects could be made on the protection and development of the whole coastal historic blocks in Qingdao Bay.
