Due to the special role and contribution of Yunnan people’s anti-Japanese activities and culture in the victory of the Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-fascist War, the cultural heritage of Anti-Japanese War possesses high historical position and huge social impact. In recent years, the protection and utilization of cultural heritage has gradually aroused the attention from all sectors of society. How to understand the concept and characteristics of cultural heritage correctly, how to protect and plan them scientifically and effectively, and how to achieve the goal of the sustainable protection under the background of urban renewal have become the important realistic subjects of current urban cultural heritage.During the years of Anti-Japanese War, some important cities in the rear area, for example Yunnan, though had not been occupied by the enemy, still suffered the bombing from Japanese Air Force repeatedly without the strength to fight back. Then the national government turned to the United States for support, and eventually, a volunteer group of aiding China was recruited and organized in private name. The full name of this group was American Volunteer Group, namely the famed "Flying Tigers" later. During the four years of this group’s existence in different forms, it was undoubtedly a sharply sword piercing the sky of dark clouds in Kunming. In the past few years, although the phenomenon of carefully conceal mentioning about "flying tigers" has been improved, it’s still mixed reviews, and some related relics have not get the due protection and attention. Coupled with the contradiction between the updating and transformation of most cities in China and the protection of cultural heritage, it shows different phenomenon such as destructing the urban historical and cultural space, cutting off the urban memory and urban context, unifying the city appearance and eliminating the regional cultural characteristics, and the embarrassing situation of the mutual independence between the old and new building space, so the study of the protection and utilization about the unique historical and cultural city space are particularly important.Based on the concepts of figuring out specific research scope, "cultural heritage", " cultural heritage of Anti-Japanese War" and the "Flying Tigers" relics, this paper did field research and collected the historical literature data from the 12 "Flying Tigers" relics in Kunming, counted their distribution, category and remains status, and analyzed their characteristics, value and realistic problems. Furthermore, based on the "Genius Loci" and the related urban design theory, this paper longitudinally studied the protection system of the war cultural heritage at home and abroad, summarized the effective research results and practical experience, made substitution analysis of the relevant typical cases, and comprehensively discussed the protection and utilization planning measures that is suitable for Chinese national conditions and the development of Kunming. According to that, it conducted practice research for Wujiaba airport relics etc. Finally, this paper pointed out that urban renewal should still return to the attention of urban culture, the positive role of historical and cultural space for the urban context inheritance, and the applicability of the theoris for urban cultural heritage protection and utilization. The study and thinking is conducive to restore the Anti-Japanese War history of Kunming and the "Flying Tigers", while has protected the cultural heritage of the Anti-Japanese War, enhanced the core competitiveness of Kunming and the promotion of regional economy. The most important thing is that it’s helpful to warn people about remembering history and cherishing peace.
