At present, the main means, also the most direct way to measure the safety performance of the car is to carry out vehicle crash tests, and the safety performance of the car is completely reflected in the degree of damage from the car to human body. Dummy is the body substitute which integrates technology of many fields. It is particularly important as the exclusive tool of testing vehicle safety performance. Dummies’ role in the field of automobile safety performance can not be replaced by any other tool. Dummy skin, bones, joints, muscles, abdomen and many other parts completely imitate the shape and internal structure of people. During the experimental process, the sensors which are installed in all the key parts, collect the collision force, torque, displacement and acceleration data as the basis, and transform them into real crash data. So as to provide a strong basis for the evaluation of vehicle safety performance.However, any tool has its own metric. Dummy is no exception. Whether dummy skin elasticity is in accord with the human body; whether the bending degree of dummy bone is able to reach the world level; whether dummy skeletal deformation under stress matches a real person. All these questions need a international general metrology. Thus dummy calibration system emerges as the times require in vehicle crash test. It is not only crucial in the initial design and construction of dummy, but also useful to give strong evidence in dummy component aging and deformation. Through the calibration, the test dummies can be evaluated both in whether meeting the vehicle collision conditions next time or not, and the component aging degree in artificially extrame environment, avoiding the problem of the dummy structure and intensity leading to the failure of the real vehicle crash test, thus provide reference and basis for whether the dummy meets the safety regulations and testing requirements.This paper mainly describes the HIII50 percentile dummy calibration system for automobile collision and calibration results. It focuses on several factors which influence dummy chest calibration. The paper resumes the comparison of the human body and HIII50 percentile dummy in several parameters; resumes the damage mechanism of human body in the car crash experiment and how to define standard damage value; resumes basic methods of vehicle crash test. The paper also introduces the main component of HIII50 percentile dummy calibration system and its working principle. The dummy chest calibration experiments have confirmed that the calibration system design method is feasible. The content of the paper provides more mature experience and demonstration method for the research in the field of vehicle crash safety and the application of dummy calibration system.
