| The ancient city is a living fossil to record the development of human civilization. Therefore, preserving the ancient city is of great cultural and historical significance. However, influenced by the developmental needs of modern city and the new urban spatial form, the ancient city has gradually become a bottleneck of city development. The traditional spatial form and the pattern features of ancient city can no longer function well. Only endowed with new functions can ancient city be able to realize both protection and development. Cultural tourism will be the best measure to protective regeneration of ancient city.Hancheng ancient city is among the second batch of National Famous Historical and Cultural Cities approved by the state council, and it is one of the few well preserved ancient cities. Although it has rich cultural tourism resources and serves as the east gate of Shaanxi Province, Hancheng ancient city faces the same problem as most small-and-medium-sized cities do. It lacks uniqueness, thus, losing its competitiveness against the others in this region. During the development of the last two decades, Hancheng city gradually gives priority to industry, with culture only as the complement. The ancient city is cast away from the central city because of the concept of "Separating the New and the Old." As the ancient city no longer functions, it will be on the decline. Therefore, promoting cultural tourism on the premise of preserving ancient city, and realizing city regeneration while developing cultural tourism are key to enhancing the value of Hancheng city.Led by Professor Qu Peiqing, the writer is privileged to take part in the compiling of Hancheng Historic City Site Plan, doing research based on the designing team’s ancient city preservation planning project.First of all, the theoretical basis of this thesis is to study the concepts of cultural tourism and the protective regeneration of the ancient city and relevant policies, comprehensively analyzing domestic and international cultural tourism development and measures to preserve National Famous Historical and Cultural Cities.Second, the writer comprehensively reviewed Hancheng city’s historical culture, the evolution of city structure, architectural style, regional status, industrial structure, and social background. Hancheng city’s cultural tourism competitiveness, resource utilization, and tourists’ demands have been summarized. Ancient city’s planning process, urban structure, commercial environment, public spatial form, and architectural unit have been investigated. Concrete problems that Hancheng city is facing in regional competition and the market development of cultural tourism have been posed.Third, a contrastive study is carried out among cities in similar situation with Hancheng, aiming to find effective measures to coordinate regional relationships, explore city uniqueness, and protectively regenerate the architectures. With on-site investigation and project survey, the writer has analyzed Langzhong, Pingyao, Zhenyuan, Chengdu, Suzhou’s successful cultural tourism products in depth. They are researched in regional, urban, and architectural levels, in order to find core competitiveness and relevant protective regeneration strategy of Hancheng city in current condition.Last but not least, by pre-analyzing cultural resource integration and competitiveness of Hancheng city, successful domestic cases, and Hancheng’s advantages and status quo, the writer has proposed the target position and implementation strategy of cultural tourism products’ developing and protecting plan. The strategy has guided the project design of urban protective regeneration. Concrete implementation strategies are proposed, such as Hancheng city’s function district strategy, periodical update strategy, public space renewal strategy, and architectural unit regeneration strategy.The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth chapters are the core chapters, aiming to explore the position and measures of Hancheng city’s cultural tourism development, and analyze the urban protective regeneration strategy and implementation plan. The writer has completed Hancheng city’s protective regeneration strategy research in the context of cultural tourism, and has explored its protective regeneration designing measures and implementation strategies. |
