With the boom in capital and trade, China is undergoing intense urbanization. During the recent decade, Chinese cities and buildings have changed dramatically, with certain traditional components uprooted while new elements added, frequently, speedily and large-scale. As far as Wuhan is concerned, a triple metropolis in central China, it has to deal with a dilemma in these old-new turns.As a theoretically informed but empirically based study, the thesis explores the preservation and regeneration of old blocks in Wuhan. Firstly, it analyses the current status of the old blocks, to elucidate the urgency for preservation and regeneration. Secondly, it refers to certain theoretical works for the purpose of investigating the reasons and locating the research avenues. Thirdly, the research, focusing on the old blocks in Wuhan, carries out visual, spatial, and typological analyses to illuminate my understanding of the urban environment. On the basis of all these steps, the thesis brings forward some methods and suggestions, according to the specific situations of the old blocks in Wuhan tri-cities.The thesis incorporates certain foreign theories, and also some experience in worldwide practice. And the research is multidisciplinary, covering urban economy, urban planning, urban design, architecture reconstructing, municipal administration and so on. It intends to offer certain insights for the preservation and regeneration of old blocks in Wuhan and other contemporary Chinese cities.
