The Thesis is theoretical based on the architectural semiotics, summarizes the application methods of symbolic elements in the design of Buddhist temple square through the analysis and study on the application of symbol elements in the Buddhist temple squares. As a carrier of religious culture, Buddhism square has its religious and social properties. It is cohesion area between regional and religious space, which is convergence space of two different spiritual worlds, through Buddhist temple square characterizes Buddhism its thoughts and doctrines to the secular world, which expresses its desire and pursuit of a spiritual world through the Buddhist temple square. The development of Buddhist Temple Square is consistent with the developments of Buddhism and society, which requires us to highlight the broad and profound Buddhist culture and rich and colorful citizen culture in a certain space, and actuate the harmonious relationship between them, so as to promote the progress and development of the Buddhist temple square design. Now with the maturity of domestic tourism industry, there are many problems on the modern Buddhist temple in the tourism development and construction wave, in which the temple square is heavily influenced. The developers are crazy about massive construction projects, pursue the grandeur blind, neglect the inherent religious atmosphere and cultural characteristics of Buddhism, are short of making full use of the Thinking on interaction, participation, local cultural characteristics, humanethinking of the square space; the design concepts are more passive, and it’s difficult to break through the conceptualized, stylized antique technique. This current situation leads to the difficulty to express the “Humanistic Buddhism ” and other new Buddhist ideas for Buddhist temple square, causes the lack of geographical features and characteristics of the times, and the modern Buddhist temple square can not meet the multiple functional requirements of modern Buddhist concept, and this puts forward the tendency of the homogenization, which is not conducive to carry forward outstanding Buddhist architectural culture.Aiming at research on the disadvantages of the temple square construction nowadays, with the help of architectural semiotics, using symbolic elements as the starting point and basic perspective, this paper collects, sorts and analyses the symbolic elements generally used in the Buddhist temple square design, integrates the application of symbolic elements in the temple square design theoretical combined with the architectural semiotics theories and practical cases, and practises the specific ecological square design cases taking the Qixia Buddhist temple as example for ecological square. The basic goal of this paper is, how to design and build modern Buddhist temple square, in addition to the introduction and concept definition, this thesis is divided into three chapters, of which the third chapter analyses and sums up the relevant symbolic elements in the design of Buddhist temple square, the fourth chapter analyses the shaping methods to the traditional Buddhist temple square, the two chapters belong to the basic research of Buddhist temple square design; the fifth chapter is based on the foregoing theoretical groundwork, studies the design methodology taking the Qixia Temple Ecological Square in Nanjing as an example, and practises and explores targeted the problems proposed in the previous chapters.
