Smart lighting is a lighting management system which contains energy saving technology, smart dimming technology and remote control technology. Smart lighting performs better in environment protection, stability and high efficiency management compare to traditional lighting system. But there are still many problems in nowadays smart lighting system. Different brands of products are not compatible due to non-standard communication protocol. The node controller is not able to connect sensors because the data rate is too low.So, how to improve the compatibility and communication quality of smart lighting is the critical work today. The major work of this paper is to study the main deficiencies of the smart lighting in current market, and propose a communication technology that is good for increasing the compatibility and communication quality of the smart lighting.Firstly, some research about the communication technology which already used in smart lighting is done in this paper. These communication technology includes KNX protocol,BACNet protocol, DALI protocol, ZigBee protocol, PLC protocol and 6LoWPAN protocol. From the analyses result of these protocols, 6LoWPAN is the best protocol for the Internet of Things application development on the reason that it can connect to the IP network seamlessly.A application protocol EAP is designed based on 6Lo WPAN in this paper, EAP is more simpler and efficient than CoAP. Secondly, in the light of the most widely use of PLC technology in smart lighting, a smart lighting system is designed with 6LoWPAN protocol based on the SEMS smart lighting system which is a product of Institute of Software Application Technology, Guangzhou & Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the EAP application protocol is implemented in the smart lighting system. Thirdly, the 6Lo WPAN sensors network is tested in office room, institute yard and street, the communication distance, data rate and stability test is carried out in different environment. Finally, the test result shows that 6LoWPAN is better than other protocols in system compatibility and communication quality for smart lighting.
