Under the background that urban space develops towards three-dimension, urban under-ground buildings has developed greatly, and different types and sizes of underground build-ing got chances to be accomplished. At the same time, the vigorous development of domestic finance promoted the commercial constructions, which laid a foundation for the use of a sunken open courtyard in commercial buildings. Different from of the lager scale urban sunken plaza, sunken open courtyards in commercial buildings has multiple effects. Such spaces for underground utility space with commercial buildings, and the form and composi-tion of space are those issues to be discussed in this article.Chapter 1: Compared with the studies on the development of cities, commercial build-ings and urban sunken plazas, the study on the open sunken courtyard in commercial build-ings is of novelty and uniqueness. This study is a combination of open space, three-dimensional square, open space landscape and the evacuation circulations.Chapter 2: The scope of this study is limited by these key words: “commercial build-ings”, “three-dimensional square”, “open space in commercial buildings”. And then the open courtyard was divided into three different types. At the same time, It analyses the reasons why this kind of space occurred and it’s current situation of development.Chapter 3: The basic characteristics, function and composition of the open sunken courtyard in commercial buildings were analyzed. Because of these basic characteristics and spatial relationship between the surroundings, open sunken courtyard in commercial build-ings has become a comprehensive integration of a variety of spatial features and functionality. While the decomposition of its constituent elements and technical elements of this kind space formed the basic interpretation of this kind space.Chapter 4: According to the scope of this study, this chapter illustrated some relevant cases and information, at the same time I did the field research of these cases though they are in a number of cities. I classified and analysed those cases through the comparison of the spa-tial feeling, composition and various types of spatial characteristics.Chapters 5 and 6: This part summarized the design principles and strategies from the previous theoretical and practical cases. It also discussed the new codes for fire protection in terms of this kind spaces.
