Monumental building is the materialization of commemorative emotion in form of architectural space,which is the most powerful kind of architecture to embody spirituality as well as to stimulate the creative passion of architects.Unlike functional building focusing on meeting the functional requirements or religious building expressing single kind of emotion,monumental building pursues rich emotional resonance as well as intensive emotional appeal.The interior space is the essence of monumental building,and light is the most essential,subtle,powerful factor,which acting on spirit directly.By shaping space,light create place.The spirit of place is an important way to embody commemoration.Light is also an important sensory stimuli.By acting on human visual,light influences human mentality and stimulating human emotions and behaviors.Light has strong spacial expressive ability,which can strengthen the volume,texture,shadow,sequences of space.Light has rich connotation.Light expresses commemoration with pluralism and plasticity.This essay is based on in-depth interpretation of commemoration,looking for the sources and carrier of commemoration,to explore how to achieve commemoration.By studying the characteristics,expressive ability and connotation of light,to explore what light can achieve.By Combining both sides we can study how light achieve commemoration in monumental buildings.This essay has collected a large number of domestic and foreign monumental buildings in which light has been uniquely used.I and my studio has taken part in some of these projects.Through the analysis and evaluation of these cases,the evidences and complementary of theoretical research has been provided.I try to figure out how light participates in expressing commemorations of monumental buildings,hoping this will provide some references and inspiration in the future.
