Monumental architecture play an important role in the modern society, as it is anancient type of architecture whose origins date back to the early stages of human history; itis meanwhile an architecture type with great vitality for the buildings themselves aredurable and the commemorative demand of humans have never receded. Therefore, eachera has its own monumental architecture that are in line with the populous spirit, and thebuildings undertake the memory of their times and are representations of the times’aspirations. Monumentality is a core attribute of monumental architecture, andcommemoration is the concrete means through which people can perceive or understandthe inherent or preset values of the buildings, and it arouses a process in which peoplerealize the significance of the object of commemoration; the monumental architecture existbecause they bear a certain meaning and they are the medium of expressing significance.The activities conducted in the space of the buildings are all related to the bearing andpresentation of the specific significance.This thesis takes the monumental architecture under the contemporary context as theresearch subject, tries to interpret the significance of two types of monumentalarchitecture the monumental architecture that have been inherited by modern people andthe monumental architecture built by modern people to generate a completeunderstanding of the significance and form, final aim being to provide reference for thedesign of modern monumental architecture.This thesis is divided into four subtopics: Firstly, the thesis begins with the conceptdiscriminate on monumentality and contemporary context. In this part, the relationsbetween commemoration and monumentality, and the origins, function and component arediscussed preliminarily for definite on the line of reasoning which the thesis abided; fromthis, the special meaning of contemporary context in this thesis is discussed for thefollowing interpretation; this subtopic also contains the summary of the phenomenon thatrepresented in modern monumental architecture which different from those of the past.Secondly, the studies on the collective image of the monumental architecture. This fromthe perspective of culture is to interpret the monumental architecture that are inherited andexplore the relations between the monumental architecture and the people that is part of thesignificance formation of the monumental architecture whereas the people refers toindividuals in different times. Thirdly, the research into the individual images ofmonumental architecture. In this section, the monumental architecture constructed bycontemporary people are interpreted and the aspirations of this era is explored withinwhich the individuals are individual persons with subjective awareness and the collectivegroups of people with same concepts. Fourthly, the research into the construction ofcommemorative atmosphere. The commemorative atmosphere is the common attribute ofall monumental architecture, and it is the first impression it exerts on the visitors, and is theprelude of the significance presentation. The research into the construction ofcommemorative significance focuses on the architectural design, the elements of thebuildings and the application of design methodology in the presentation of significance.
