With humankind able to fly in the sky, the world’s entire aerospace industry has developed more than 100 years. Various kinds of demonstrators make huge contributions in its development. Most aircrafts in use for both military and civil purposes has drawn concept establishment and key technologies from demonstrators in flight tests. It is a must of flight tests and demonstration applied to aerospace industry, even with the most accurate calculation and ground simulation.This paper overviews the course of aircraft development from 1600, and explore reasons for United States leading in the world aerospace industry. The development course and specialty of X series aircraft are generalized. Then the United States’ s success is attributed to planned, organized, step-by-step flight demonstrations and tests of key technologies, which theorized the prototype strategy. The main content is given below:First, from the respect of prototype and prototype strategy, its necessity and the relationship among between prototype strategy, technology maturity and the developing cycle of weapon systems is described. It’s pointed out that the primary aim of prototype strategy study is, in strategic level, to explore the best perspective that fit into Chinese high technology development condition and strengthen our competitiveness. Meanwhile, in technology level, based on the assessment system of technology maturity, the status of key technologies can be grasped exactly and its related demonstrations and flight tests can be planned reasonably and effectively. With the cooperation between prototype strategy in strategic level and prototype tests in technology level, the vitals of assault on key technology would go smoothly.Then, the course of aircraft development and X series aircraft is overviewed in detail. In one hand, the development course and specialty of X series aircraft are generalized. In the other hand, the organization pattern, technology development mode and USA’s concealed aerospace development strategy is conducted by using the model example of analysis. The methodology can be referred by our own aerospace development. At last, considering our national conditions and organization system, the paper recognizes several problems in our prototype strategy and presents the enlightenment from X series aircraft. Moreover, an integral proposal of our prototype strategy is assumed.
