After the second industrial revolution, the system of modern architectural design became the mainstream. New materials and new technologies emerging constantly and they replaced the original traditional architectural materials as well as related technologies. Stronger performance of materials and more efficient technologies met the needs of the city’s explosive growth but also eliminate the regional difference of different places. Under the influence of the global communication, architecture, traditional culture and regional characteristic became not have intense connection any more. As a result, more and more people are rethinking the problems after modernism prevailed, trying to find architectural noumenon, and the construction of the traditional culture.Material is one of the basic issues of architecture. At the same time, traditional material, which can be used to restore buildings and traditional culture’s feature, has a very important position. Traditional material contains the massive cultural connotation. At the same time, their own features also can not be replaced by other materials. They are easy-made, low cost, and have a unique artistic expression. New technologies, new construction methods also give them more energy. A lot of people at home and abroad also show their interest in traditional materials and they also have made many modern architectures which use of traditional materials.First of all, this essay verifies relevant definition of traditional construction materials and discusses the materiality of materials, isolating structure properties and none structure properties of materials. Under these purposes, this essay makes the structure and the sensory properties of materials as a breakthrough point, introducing different traditional materials of their respective characteristics and application in past time. Then, through analysing a large number of instances to summarize the present application of new techniques, new technology and new technique on traditional material. Finally it can provide inspiration for the application of traditional materials in the future.
