In comparison with the construction industry in international developed countries, the level of information of China’s construction industry is seriously lagging behind, even in comparison with the domestic industry, such as electricity, gas and other industries, the degree of information technology in the construction industry is relatively low,and the information level is an important factor which influence China’s construction industry competitiveness. BIM(Building Information Modeling)as an innovative technology and production method, which is a typical application way of information technology in construction industry. The rapid development of BIM has brought about a gigantic revolution again in construction industries of Europe and the United States and other developed countries since its proposal. Design process and construction process are the two important nodes of construction industry, which can make it increase the profits, the paper is limited to research on BIM technology application in the design process.This paper is based on BIM technology application in the design process to elaborate the flaws of traditional design process and difficulties it arise, and find such problems exist: In building the model just the component is accumulated on the space. The application of the model is limited to the project tender stage and the period after winning the bid of construction drawing stage, but it cannot be applied to whole life cycle of the project; Collaborative design aspect of the traditional design process is mainly based on external reference of CAD technology and network hard disk with specific permissions. It’s applied primarily in the drawing stage, but this Collaborative technology has unavoidable errors which occur when the project area is too large; Visualization aspects of traditional design process exists in those flaws when a drawings’ external reference has changed, and the designer cannot find all the changes intuitively, etc. The paper also analyzed the core competitiveness of design process after BIM technology had been introduced, and taking a practical program for application analysis.. The results show that: BIM technology applied in the design process has many advantages, such as visual function of BIM technology make great convenience on communication between designer and the owner of project, it makes sure that the design results meet the requirements of the owner, also the application of collision analysis function of BIM technology will eliminate the mismatch of design results to avoid part of the design from being changed in the construction process; The application of BIM technology can bring significant economic benefits for the project, collision analysis function applied on the project quoted in this article found 218 influential collision point. It can avoid additional 529.4 man-days, and direct loss about of ¥ 1.5 million by calculation; BIM technology can guarantee the overall quality of the project, including the quality connected with security and the quality of appearance and usage which is unrelated with security, etc.The significance of the research paper lies in quantifying the economic benefits after the application of the BIM technology. It also makes the value of BIM technology application more intuitive and aims at promoting the usage of BIM technology in the future design of the program. Finally, it facilitates informatization process of China’s design industry.
