China presently is encountered with the severe problem of aging population, whose negative impact will last well into the long future. Faced with this situation, China has taken a series of measure, with a variety of theoretical researches completed. However, concerning the issue of providing for the aged people, the majority of the studies were focused on urban areas, while those on rural areas where roughly three- fourths of the population are aging, are rare. Meanwhile, “home-based care for the elderly” is the mainstream pattern of support in rural areas, highlighting the urgent demand to meet the housing needs of living environment for the elderly. Therefore, an in-depth and systematic study on relevant problems of “home-based care for the elderly” pattern in rural areas from the perspective of architecture is of great significance and urgency. To satisfy the housing needs of the elderly people through renovation is not only cost-saving and labor-saving; it also conforms to the general atmosphere of rural upgrading in Cangzhou area. Hence, this paper takes “home-based care for the elderly” as support pattern, the rural area of Cangzhong as research region, problems of the housing needs of living environment reflected by the aged in the rural area of Cangzhou as study object and optimal aging renovation design as research means. The results of the paper are as follows.Firstly, the paper discusses the characteristics of the aged people in rural areas from physiological, psychological, behavioral and social aspects, offering general advices for optimal aging renovation design accordingly.Secondly, after interviews and investigations in the rural area of Cangzhou through status survey and questionnaire survey, this research narrowed the scope of discussion to the three most representative residences, including the residence of Su Family in Dongxinzhuang village, the residence of the author and the residence of Ding Family. Three villages were investigated with special focus and care, and they were: Dongxinzhuang village, Zhang village and S hi village. Then problems were summarized in terms of housing, infrastructure, road traffic and environmental landscape.Thirdly, based on the problems reflected from the investigation, this paper forms principles of the optimal aging renovation design under “home-based care for the elderly” pattern of Cangzhou rural area, and, by analyzing their housing demands performance, formulated reference standards for the renovation.Fourthly, on the basis of principles and performance as well as standard s of renovation, this paper elaborates on the renovation strategy in terms of housing, infrastructure, road traffic and environmental landscape. It further applies the strategies to the three residences and three villages, making the renovation more targeted than before. This paper aims to contribute to the improvement of living environment for the aged people under “home-based care for the elderly” pattern of Cangzhou rural area, to provide material for renovation for the aging population for Cangzhou rural area and the similar areas, and to encourage more people to conduct study on the support of aging population in rural areas.
