Abstract/Summary:
The rapid development of motor transport caused deterioration of urban atmospheric environment, serious traffic congestion, contradiction between car and people, and many other problems. While the current development of our city is dominated by motor transport, urban construction activities adapt to the trend of mobile passively. As a result, the traditional city space environment has changed profoundly, and the traditional walking in the present city is facing unprecedented difficulties. This not only increased the dependence on motor traffic of people, but also exacerbated the negative influence bringed by motor traffic to the city.Promoting people to travel on foot is the the root of reducing the dependence on motor traffic and an important way to solve the difficult problems in current cities. Therefore, urban pedestrian environment improvement has become a research hot spot in of urban and rural planning. To construct an urban human settlements environment that can promote people to walk, it is very necessary for us to study the relationship between urban environment and walking.Urban blocks are the main space vector of residents’ daily walking behavior. So the research selected urban block as object to analyze the effect of urban blocks’ physical environment on residents’ walking behavior through empirical study.First of all, physical environment characteristics that may affect walking and their evaluation indexes were determined. Through the review of theory and empirical researches, this article put forward that urban environment’s effects on walking performed on three aspects: triggering walking demands, inducing walking activity, and creating walking opportunities. And then urban blocks’ s physical environment attributes were concluded as diversity, accessibility, connectivity, security, and function. Based on this, evaluation indexes and their calculation models were selected. Then, study area was selected and data was obtained. 10 urban blocks in the north of Chongqing Jialing river were selected as samples. Questionnaire method was used to get residents’ walking behavior and social attribute data. At the same time, physical environment data was got through CAD electronic document measuring and field survey revising. After that, physical environment indicators affecting residents’ walking were determined. Screening operation is with the aid of SPSS Statistics software. The first step, use Pearson correlation test to screen effect walking related parameters preliminary. The second step, add residents’ social attribute variable to establish analysis model, and then use multivariate logistic regression analysis to analyze the blocks the influence degree of physical environment indicators on walking behavior controlling the influence of residents’ social attribute variables. Finally, according to the gender and age, the sample was subdivide respectively into two groups of men, women and three groups of 20 to 39, 40 to 59, 60 so on. The same analysis method was used to study the different physical environment influence on different groups of residents. Thus more detailed results were obtained to provide the corresponding reference for urban planning and construction in the future.
