A Study Of Gelo Settlements’ Architectural Features In Guizhou And Chongqing

Gelo minority is an ancient local ethnicity in Guizhou. They accumulated tremendous quantity of experience during the process of adapting the unique geographical conditions and the ethnic fusion, which generated a traditional settlement that has distinct regional feature. However, it barely became a recognizable ethnicity possibly because of the historical factors. Nowadays, these ethnic minorities are easier to be influenced by foreign ethnicities due to the convenient transportation and more stable life, which makes it more difficult to maintain the architectural characters. Therefore, the research of the architectures, as the part of the ethnic culture, is imperative.Gelo minority has close relationship with The Yelang Nation since ancient times, and The Yelang Nation is just a part of Guizhou. Today it is keep the same situation. In this paper, the research object is the villages which Gelo minority today live in. The field study started thought the “Traditional villages in China” announced by the Ministry of housing. The locations include Puding County, Daozhen County, Wuchuan County, Pingzheng village, Shiqian County and Haokou village.Beginning with analysing the background of Gelo minority, this paper analyzes the Gelo’s historical evolution, distribution, social, organizational structure and religion, revealed Gelo villages and construction and development of historical and cultural background, it is objectively necessary condition for the formation and development.Factors by analyzing the development and the feature of Gelo settlements. The development of Gelo village can be analyzed by the historical theory and field study. And the feature can be explained thought four part, including diversity, familial, defence and the landscape part.And then, this paper analyzes the building in Gelo settlements, including the function, space, environment, architectural structure, building materials, ornament and the way how to construct.At last this paper summary overview of the full text.
