The contradiction between limited land and urban population determine the intensive development trend of cities in China. To some extent today’s development of urban centre can be regarded as the epitome of cities in future, complex buildings all over urban centre make various functions concentrated and contribute to increasing of city working efficiency, accordingly, complex building a kind of building type that is magnanimous and crucial in future cities and its exterior open space affects people’s life quality directly. At present there is short of the guidelines which arming at exterior open space of complex building at home, there is uneven in design quality of exterior space and designers always pure too much form rather than needs of users. This thesis takes the exterior open space of commercial complex in urban centre as research object and selects various exterior open space of West Nanjing Road in Shanghai as respondents, analyses, investigates and compares the potential needs of users and the real using status of exterior open space, try to make effective suggestions on designing of complex’s exterior open space in certain area.The first chapter of the thesis educes research background, significance and content of the topic, meanwhile it outlines the research methods and frame of the whole thesis. The second chapter defines some related concepts and lists the functions of commercial complex’s exterior open space. The third chapter expounds related theories and introduces research methods that this thesis refers to briefly. The fourth chapter expounds the process and result of Stated Preference which aiming at potential spatial users in Shanghai. The fifth chapter is based on the result of spot investigation and analyses the using status of exterior open space in West Nanjing Road. The sixth chapter analyses some spatial properties such as accessibility and openness by means of space syntax, which become references of the analysis above. The seventh chapter makes a summary of the thesis, makes some suggestions on designing of commercial complex’s exterior open space in urban centre and points out the limitations in this research.
