The stability of aeolian sand used in high-filled embankment is one of the major problems in building desert expressway. Taking the later operation of high embankment project of the end of bridge in Yulin transiting line in No. 210 national highway into consideration, a series of study is carried out on the stability of high-filled embankment in the Maowusu Desert. The main procedures are as follows:1.A systematic survey is conducted on the related documents of desert highways at home and abroad and some desert highways are investigated, physical properties and engineering mechanics properties of aeolian sand in the Maowusu Desert are tested and analyzed systematically, then some related statistical rules are put forward.2.Based on the research on documents both at home and abroad and field investigation, a deep study is conducted on the influencing factors, damaging characteristics and theoretical analysis approaches of high embankment stability in desert highways, calculation model and method of aeolian sand stability of high embankment are proposed.3.According to the geometry model of inhomogeneous slop of high-filled embankment at the end of bridge, combining with MIDAS-GTS software, the influence of such factors as different boundary condition, meshing generation, unit order on calculating accuracy of stability of high embankment is analyzed. Based on two kinds of stability analysis of homogenous embankment and inhomogeneous one, the numerical calculating results of finite elements and those of theoretical analysis are compared4.The numerical simulation is employed to analyze the influence of mechanical index and model parameters of different aeolian sand filling, of different geometric sizes of high embankment on the safety coefficient of high embankment stability in desert as well as the change law. The results show that the elastic modulus, poisson’s ratio and tensile strength of aeolian sand filling, the height and width of embankment have little impact on the overall stability of high embankment in desert and that internal friction angle of aeolian sand filling and the ratio of slope of high embankment slope have noticeable impact on the stability of high embankment.5.In view of the later operation conditions, field investigation results of high embankment of Yulin transiting highway in the Maowusu Desert as well as the numerical simulation analysis and theoretical analysis, some typical sections of highway are calculated, the design and construction techniques are put forward on the stability of high embankment in the Maowusu Desert.
