Although China’s highway construction has rapidly developed, asphalt pavement still faced the distresses such as rutting, cracking, water damage because of insufficient compaction. As a new technology of the asphalt pavement compaction, vacuum compaction has a lot of advantages such as reducing the void ratio, improving the compaction, prolonging the service life of pavement and so on. Thus it’s of great practical significance to research on the vacuum compaction technology.This paper not only verifies the feasibility of vacuum compaction technology by means of experiment, but studies on design and simulation of the vacuum compactor, which is based on the experimental research.Firstly, we discussed and studied sealing and designing solutions of the compactor before designing. We found the best sealing solutions through experiments and simplified the original solutions of the vacuum compactor afterwards. We finished the system design and the part design such as walking system, vibration system, vibration damping system according to design requirements. These main parts are designed with reference to the walking vibratory roller. Finally, using 3d modeling software Pro/E to establish the vacuum compactor and import it in the finite element analysis software. Then using ANSYS Workbench do the static analysis and modal analysis so that the data of stress, displacement distribution of the frame and the natural frequency can be revealed.The completed vacuum compaction experiments, the designed compactor in this paper can provide areas for vacuum compaction technology on further research.
