In recent years, with the research and development of space technology, humans gradually discover the Earth’s space environment effects on the various aspects of Space exploration technology, and the detection and research of the ionosphere are gradually developed. Researchers using direct detection mode or remote sensing detection mode to detect the ionosphere currently, after processing the echo signal data, getting the ionosphere physics parameters and their change rule, can the detection technology and equipment be improved and rational use.With the rapid development of hardware technology and the software technology gradually improve, design and development of real-time signal processing system has also gradually entered to a new stage whose main center is "software". The software radio technology was developed and applied in communication field as the openness and comprehensive programmability prominent merit of its structure. Its signal processing way is usually adopt the method of combine the DSP with the FPGA to design. In the process of detecting and researching on the ionosphere, the software radio technology is also applicable to design the ionosphere radar system. Using the flexibility, openness, reconfiguration and fully programmable characters of this technique, then using software to control the emission signal and transmitting frequency, this method to design the system is called the ionosphere software radar detection system. Moreover "software radar" concept has also already been known and accepted gradually.Therefore, we use the software radio technology and related equipment for radar system designing during researching. This article first describes the project background and current situation of domestic and foreign development of the ionospheric sounding radar system design, then introduced the radar design technique rapid evolution from based on hardware to software radio development processes, and it also introduces the current development of software radio and its merits. Next, it introduces the principle and method of the ionospheric detection technique. Then this paper introduces the working principle, the flow and implementation method of the open source Software Radio(GNU Radio). And introduces the structure and function of the Universal Software Radio Peripheral(USRP) which is as its hardware support kit, Then introduces the functions of the module, function, and design methods which are related to design ionosphere software radar detect system in GNU Radio. In this paper gives the flow chart and the simulation results of software radar detect system functions. Finally, completes the closed loop experiment, then analyzes the experimental results, and design a method to realize the open-loop ionosphere detection technology, summarizes the insufficiency of system, and discusses the development prospect of software radar.
