ABSTRACT:According to the data published by the WHO, children with diability account for20-40%of the total child population globally. In China, approximately199,000disabled children aged between0-6are adding to the figure annually, amongst which the mental handicapped occupy the highest proportion. At the same time, China is also the country with the largest number of children with hearing impairment in the world. This is a huge figure. With the rising number of disabled children and advancement of modern medical technology, disabled children are receiving greater public attention. Therefore, architectural designs for medical institutions that specialises in providing for disabled children, such as child rehabilitation centres, recovery hospitals, school for deaf-mutes etc. urgently need to be studied further and explored. This article takes children rehabilitation centre as an example to analyse and investigate its interior design.I have collected a large amount of national and international references via school resources, as well as field studies on existing recovering centres for disabled children, including mainly the Tangshan Rehabilitation Hospital and Tianjin Wumalu reovery centre for treating disabled children. The essay is principally based on architecture and psychological theories, combined with relevant references, analysis of questionnaire feedbacks and realistic data from fieldtrip studies, via. Respecting the psychological and physiological characteristics of disabled children, putting a human touch in the concepts of designing their medical facilities, comparing domestic and foreign studies and practices to propose modern design plans and a summary of its application. The essay is consisted of six chapters. The first chapter is an introduction of the study background and purpose, as well as comparisons and analysis of theories and application research both at home and abroad. The second chapter mainly describes humanised approach to design concepts and functions, in addition, including analysis of actual cases of children rehabilitation centres and a summary of the existing problems in space designs. The third chapter is an analysis of associated behavioural states with different themes of treatments that the rehabilitation centres use, proposing basic user needs to the treatment environment. The fourth chapter applies principles of architecture and psychology to demonstrate and emphasis the importance of the human element in designs. The fifth chapter is the focus of this article, bringing forward strategic designs that are based on functional and emotional basis. The sixth chapter is a summary of this essay, with the hopes that this article can provide some new ideas and understandings to designers who dedicate to medical institutions for the disabled.
