Research On Plants Landscape Of Shanghai Memorial Space

Memorial site is one of the earliest site types of human beings, which is the important cultural sites bearing ethnic and national history. Plant is the important landscape element, it has certain cultural and landscape value. Further studies on plant landscape of memorial sites and summary of previous experience have implications to plant landscape construction. Memorial sites in Shanghai are typical “Shanghai style gardens”. This paper classify the Shanghai memorial sites into three types based on the formation mechanism of memorial sites: the initiative first bearing type, the initiative second bearing type and the passive first bearing type. This paper selects 36 different memorial sites as the research object, and analyses 30 of them qualitatively and quantitatively. The main conclusions are as follows:(1) There are 251 species of plants in memorial sites in Shanghai, which belonged to 77 families and 154 genera. The memorial sites are all rich in plant species, cultural content and ancient trees. Shanghai memorial sites make full use of plant ornamental characteristics to express the feelings of remember, reflection, praise and joy. The integration of the landscape design elements can form a variety of space form types like open space, semi-open space, covering space and vertical space. The plant create solemn memorial environment and contemplative recreational environment.(2) Various types of plant communities take Cinnamomum camphora, Magnolia grandiflora, Juniperus chinensis, etc. as the key plant, combined with flowering, foliage and fruit-effect plants, good at emotional expression and space layout. Among the three types of the memorial sites, the passive first bearing type is rich in cultural content, and the initiative first bearing type is good at emotional expression.(3) The characteristics of plant landscape of memorial sites in Shanghai are perfectly fit to local condition and environment, giving full play to the features of “Shanghai style gardens”, such as popularity, participatory, diversity and compatibility. However, the plant landscape of memorial sites in Shanghai should pay attention to the prospect construction in different sites, enrich the understory plant species, strengthen the management of plants, and the deficiency like the lack of types of memorial sites, put forward the optimization strategy and provide a reference for memorial sites construction.
