Our country has the largest high-speed railway networks with the fastest operational speed in the world, after more than 10 years’ construction and transformation of former railways. With increasing technical sophistication in constructing high-speed railways, the construction resources are more and more rich. It is of crucial importance to sum up experience of construction projects and to research how to optimize and control the project duration, for the construction of the large-scaled intercity railways and the high-speed railway networks in China and for the high-speed railway constructions to be launched with transnational strategies. Based on the analysis of large amount of statistical data and related theories of construction duration researches, this article discusses how to optimize and control the project duration.Based on the questionnaires about the influencing factors on the construction duration of high-speed railways, this article focus on seven key factors: project quality, project cost, design drawings and changes, construction management levels, project technology levels, project environment, and the balanced allocation of resources. Then it analyzes each influencing factor based on the questionnaires gathered from the related high-speed railway construction companies. After the reliability test of the data from questionnaires, the expected value of influence factors on the project duration will be put forward with the probability theory. And then it analyzes the relationship between influence factors and project duration to establish the multi-objective optimization under the resource constraints of quality, cost and other factors, and to put forward the model of optimization and control of high-speed railway construction project duration according to the expected value. Finally, according to the charts and data of the Nanjing South Railway Station project in the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed railway construction, this article calculates the optimal duration and analyzes the corresponding changes of the cost and project quality.High-speed railway construction belongs to the large project, with large scaled construction sites, various resources, high construction investment, high-level of construction management and technologies and complex construction environment. All these factors cause the difficulties to control the construction duration. With the quick development of the high-speed railway construction, this article discusses how to optimize and control the project duration. It has certain practical significance to the healthy development of railway construction in China and to the increasing of international competitiveness. At the same time, this article offers references for the related construction companies in such factors as project quality improvement, cost saving, resource optimization allotment, etc.
