Elementary school, as a carrier of the basic education in china, is an important stage in children’s development. With the advent of information age, global education thought is also changing constantly. Now China is in the crucial stage of transition from exam-oriented education to quality education, and the single, boring space form of the traditional elementary school buildings cannot meet the demand of the development of the new education idea. Therefore, how to use the public space outside the classroom, to create a good environment of study and activities for the children, has become a concern in today’s elementary school buildings’creation.On the other hand, with the rapid development of the city, the construction of elementary school needs to respond adequately to the collision, extrusion and containment from the surrounding environment. Thus, how to construct a suitable public space in elementary school under stressful urban land conditions and complex urban backgrounds has a positive realistic significance.This article focuses on the design of public space in elementary school under the background of city development. Based on a large number of relevant literatures, field surveys and statistical analyses of the cases, this article deeply studies and analyzes the development course and features of public space design in urban elementary school after the reform and opening up. Combined with excellent examples at home and abroad, as well as the designing research and experience in related practical projects, this paper explores the public space design method of elementary school which is suitable for the practical needs.Firstly, from practical background, this study discusses the background, purpose, and methods of the research, and defines the concept and composing elements of public space in urban elementary school. Secondly, it sums up the development process of the design of buildings and public space in elementary school domestic and overseas; it analyses the problems and experience during the process of open design of overseas elementary school, and its practical adaptation in our country. Though review and research and practical investigation on numerous cases, under existing resource conditions, it analyses the status and features of the design of public space in elementary school in our country. At last, combined with excellent examples at home and abroad, it makes a systematic analysis and summary on all kinds of design methods and elements of public space of elementary school, from the space features, shape, scale, interface and internal factors, etc. Relying on practical project, it summarizes the design principles of public space in urban elementary school, which can be adapted to our modern education concepts.
