Academy of classical learning, as a distinctive educational architectural form in ancienttimes of China, began to take shape in Tang Dynasty and existed as a educational mechanismbetween state-run school and private school. During the thousands of years of feudal society,the academy of classical learning has undergone numerous twists and turns, which isevidenced by its rapid development as well as its downturn due to the external suppression. Itfinally sprung up nationwide with unshakable status in the educational history of China in bothof its sphere of influence and incidence.Against the backdrop of the Chinese ancient culture and education, this paper analyzesthe origin, development and evolution of Jiangsu Academy of Classical Learning. On the basisof the literature review and field investigation, it summarizes its selection of site, functionorganization and layout and architectural design features mainly from the perspective ofregionalism and analyzes its profound cultural connotation.Originally established in Northern Song Dynasty, it grew up and Yuan and Ming Dynastyand reached the climax in Qing Dynasty. However, it gradually died out in late Qing dynasty.In terms of its selection of site, it includes three methods, namely, the infusion of feelings withthe natural landscape, the idyllic gardens and its proximity with the political and religiouscenter so as to strike a perfect balance between human beings and architecture as well asenvironment and demonstrate the ideal state that man is an integral part of nature. It isdeservedly heralded as an architectural type with unique cultural connotation, artistic featuresand aesthetic styles.The architectures of academy, as the material embodiment of the academy culture, havegiven prominence to the three main functions of teaching, sacrifice and collection of booksand take on the plane layout with the salient features of the traditional set of etiquettes. Thearchitectures of Jiangsu Academy of Classical Learning, with simple and pleasant architecturalstyles and decorations, vividly reflect the common characteristics of the architectures ofacademy.The research on the architectures of Jiangsu Academy of Classical Learning could reflectthe space organization method and aesthetical implications of the regional architectures inJiangsu as well as its cultural connotations under the circumstances of the culturalindividualization in today’s world.
