In the process of conservation and rehabilitation of historical areas, decision makers andconservation experts are always facing one crucial problem, which is how to make the newbuildings adapt to the landscape and environment of historical areas. The changes of the builtenvironment should be made toward positive direction under guidance, so as to promote thereservation and elevation of the value of historical areas. This crucial problem has beenconcerned and debated for a long time, now various views exist. So a systematic study on theintrinsic factors and decision factors that influence the creation of this kind of architecturalform will help decision makers, designers and the public more aware of this problem, and helpto establish a common platform for dialogue, thus realize high-quality architectural creationand reserving the overall style of historical areas simultaneously. This study is mainly about new building design in historical areas-the architecture formsand the internal logic, which includes the intrinsic factors and decision factors that influencethe architecture form in historical areas, and some influence mechanism during the process ofcreation. The study first summarized the theory and practice of both domestic and foreign newbuildings in historical areas, and re-sorted this kind of buildings according to the differences intheir forms. Then the intrinsic factors that affect the formation of different types of newarchitecture forms and their design processes were studied. Different types of new architectureforms were compared, and the thoughts and trends in this field at home and abroad wereanalyzed. Based on this, the internal logic of designing architecture forms of new buildings inhistorical areas was further studied, which involved some main factors affecting thearchitecture forms and the mechanism of how they act in the process of creation and decisionof the new buildings. Some appropriate eight design principles were proposed. Finally, thepractice of low-carbon community regeneration pilot project of the Old City of Yangzhou wasillustrated for further analysis and summary.
