As a new type of transportation, the construction of high-speed railway will bring far-reaching influence on the transportation, economic development and people’s production and life along the areas of the roads. As the forefront of China’s reform and opening, South Jiangsu lies in the central part of the fertile and picturesque delta of the Yangtze River in southern Jiangsu Province. The Planning of Modernization Construction Demonstration Area of South Jiangsu has defined that the scope contained Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou and Zhenjiang city. South Jiangsu is one of the most developed areas in our country. Also, the urbanization speed and quality, as well as transportation infrastructure construction level of this region are among the top. With the operation of Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railroad, Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, and Nanjing-Hangzhou Intercity Railroad, South Jiangsu has entered the "High-speed Rail Era ".This dissertation chose high speed railway as the research object, South Jiangsu as the study carrier. With the support of GIS and remote sensing technology, we tried to investigate the spatial effect mechanism of high speed railway in theory, and provide reference in practice for development and urbanization process of South Jiangsu and related research on high-speed space influence.Considering the important role of the traffic accessibility and its changes to regional economic development and spatial structure of the region, this dissertation took high-speed rails accessibility as the starting point. From the perspective of high-speed railways directly causing of spatial pattern changes of accessibility, this dissertation synthetically analyzed the accessibility impact of railway network, the change of regional spatial interaction and land use along the roads with the high-speed railway construction, and then established the high-speed regional effect analysis framework. The main research content and conclusions include:(1) The changes of accessibility pattern under the impact of High-speed Railways. Based on distance model, this dissertation took the spatial, time and economic distance index to measure the node accessibility, then analyzed the change of weighted average accessibility before and after the of high-speed rail opened. Taking Nanjing as the research object, we put forward a new accessibility evaluation method of regional molecular division according to the shortest distance, which help to analyze the effect on accessibility pattern of the regional central cities as the high-speed railways were put into use. The results showed that the high-speed increased regional "space-time contraction", and reduced the frictional resistance between areas to improve the overall level of the regional accessibility. This effect also showed more significant regional differences, as it increased the unfairness of accessibility benefits. For the central city, the influences on the medium or distant area were more violent and outstanding in particular. Time costs of each node to Nanjing had diminished slightly, and the accessibility gap was gradually narrowing.(2) The changes of regional spatial interaction under the impact of High-speed Railways. Characteristics of the pattern and the evolution trend of regional economic linkage among the31county-level administrative nodes were analyzed by using the data of city quality and accessibility. Based on the field spread model, the dissertation tried to investigate the relationship cooperation and competition mechanism between cities in South Jiangsu by the delimitation of urban hinterland areas. The results showed that the spatial relationship between cities followed the principles of distance attenuation effect, and accessibility pattern changes promoted the changes of regional spatial interaction. The largest strength of regional economic linkage was among the Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou, forming a dominant economic ties axis. This axis extended to Zhenjiang and Nanjing since the opening of high-speed railway. It constituted the basic skeleton and the dominant direction of economic ties. When the high-speed railways opened, they made major hub cities’ hinterlands overlap and intensified competition between cities. Wuxi and Changzhou showed some improvement of ability in the interior of regional competition, while the effect of Zhenjiang was narrowed down. The spatial interaction relation between urban hinterlands in South Jiangsu can be summarized as coexist, containing, half contains and competition.(3) The changes of land use under the impact of High-speed Railways. Based on the two periods of land use data, this dissertation not only explored the urban expansion driving force of the development of road infrastructure, but also analyzed land use/cover changes and landscape pattern changes over the high-speed rail site and along the railways with GIS and landscape ecology methods. The results show that high-speed rail has directivity to urban expansion, it played an important role along the rail line for that it became a hot spot of urban expansion area around. It was characterized by the rapid increase of construction land, and other types of land use quickly transfer to construction land. The land use changes of areas had obvious regional difference. As the strengthening of sensible and convenience of the public transport, it made a greater degree of artificial interference area. Also the patch shape became complex and the landscape fragmentation increased.Above all, the opening of high-speed rails compressed time and spatial distance to improve accessibility in cities and then promoted the changes of regional spatial interaction, which made faster and closer linkages between cities. It was beneficial to guide the gathered development of urban at the core of high-speed site and along the corridor of high-speed lines, and eventually lead to the changes of regional land use and landscape pattern. Innovation of this dissertation may be the improvement of the accessibility evaluation models and research framework of high-speed rails spatial effects. Mechanism for the effect of high speed railway on the regional development has been carried on the preliminary discussion. This dissertation could provide references for development and urbanization process of South Jiangsu and other similar studies under the background of High-speed Rail Era.
