Study On The Reuse Of Productive-Remains In Industrial Heritage

Industrial heritage has become an influential type of heritage,"heritage value" and "emotional significance" are two aspects of its importance. In China, the practice of industrial heritage conservation is ahead of its theory study, current efforts in those two aspects exist inadequate. Firstly due to the inaccurate understanding of the technical value when identifying industrial heritage, values of the heritage and its integrity have been partly missing. Secondly it’s easy to fall into a over change way of reusing, the recognition of industrial history might not be able to perceive in the new environment. The former is the fundamental reason, the latter is a symptom.Therefore this study found the key sector to solve these problems:the Productive-Remains. As the main bearer of technical value, the Productive-Remains is an essential substance to form the integrity of industrial heritage, including four types of objects:Structures, Production equipments, Production activity traces, and Other residual elements. This paper sees the Productive-Remains as an independent material system in industrial heritage, studies its concept, types, value, features, and its conservation and reuse. And this paper studies the reuse of the Productive-Remains in three perspectives:function, form and materials, then concluding that there are three types of reuse:Functional remodeling, Landscape creating, and Material utilizing.This study intends to provide a way of reverse thinking. Protecting and reusing the Productive-Remains is one kind of approach, the purpose is to emphasize the technical value in order to protect the integrity of industrial heritage, and to create a Post-producing-atmosphere in the reuse of industrial heritage in order to keep its authenticity. So this study expects to supplement the Productive-Remains in the research level by forming a comprehensive and systematic cognition, and then focus on the types and technique of reuse in order to expand the possibility of practical level in industrial heritage’s new life cycle.
