With the development of the national economy, it’s urgent to construct the smart grid with good resource allocation, network monitoring and advanced communications system. As the smart grid information collection system, Smart metering system becomes the best choice because of its low power consumption, low cost, easy networking and other prominent characteristics. Based on the meter reading system hardware platform,this paper completes the design and implementation of smart metering wireless network MAC, including system network management, channel access and data transmission capabilities. The performance of the system was tested and analyzed, while the improvement scheme of the superframe is proposed and the simulation is carried out.Specifically, the main content and innovation point of this paper is illustrated as follows:First, the implementation of smart metering system is proposed, and the hardware platform, software architecture, and network topology for the smart metering systems are demonstrated. Hardware platform is mainly composed of RF chips and MCU, the software architecture is the independent protocol stack developed based on ZigBee standards. Unlike the traditional star and tree topology wireless sensor networks, the system uses an innovative wireless mesh network topology, which possese greater flexibility and maintainability.Second, the smart metering wireless network MAC detailed design is proposed, and based on the IEEE802.15.4standard a wireless network meter reading system MAC is developed, including interface design and code implementation of network management, channel access and data transfer capabilities. On this basis, the system performance for different MAC parameters were tested and analyzed based on the system hardware platforms and wireless mesh network topology.Third, wireless network improvement scheme of meter reading system based on MAC super frame is proposed. Combined with characteristics of wireless mesh network topology, the MAC layer super-frame is deeply studied, the corresponding super-frame structure improvement scheme is drawn, and the the simulation and contrast for this algorithm in NS-2simulation software is implemented. Simulation results show that the system delay is significantly improved.
