In the21stcentury, the construction of secure, stable, efficient, and economicalsmart grids has become the focus of electric power research. The implementation ofsmart grids advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is not only the first step ofrealizing smart grids, but also the core of interaction between users and smart grids.Wireless network technology takes the development of smart grid as an opportunityto enrich the system structure of smart grids. Meanwhile, wireless networktechnology will extend the senses and applications of smart grids further. However, due to the introduction of wireless network technology, AMI system has much moreprobability to suffer from network information security threats. Therefore, researching on security-based wireless AMI system is of great significance.Firstly, considering that the traditional CSMA/CA mechanism cannot directlymeet the rigid energy consumption demand of wireless AMI system, atime-slice-based communication mechanism is proposed to solve the problem. Inorder to provide a new communication scheme for wireless AMI system, a randomkey encryption technology is employed in the time-slice-based communicationmechanism. The scheme proposed can avoid network data collision, thus reducingnetwork energy consumption. Meanwhile, the encoded bits of key can be decreasedwithout reducing key safety, with random key switching mechanism adopted, thereby lowering energy consumption loss caused by node encryption. Thesimulations of network attack and node energy consumption are conducted, using theNS2network simulation software. The simulation results validate the feasibility ofthe scheme.Secondly, a network protocol framework for wireless AMI system is designed, and safety measures for this system are taken as well. Meanwhile, a structure forsecurity-based wireless AMI system with time slices and random key technologies isestablished. An a-type wireless collection node with IEEE802.11, a b-type wireless collection node with IEEE802.15.4, a wireless access gateway compatible with twokinds of protocols, and a data management server for wireless AMI with OPCtechnology are designed and developed. Finally, wireless AMI system developed is applied to the intelligent communitywith the smart grid terminal and extended to the cold-rolled production workshop ofthe iron and steel industry. The result verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of thewireless AMI system with time slices communication mechanism and random keyencryption method.
