Facilities Planning and Design of the workshop directly affects the operation cost of an enterprise. As for the manufacturing enterprises in our country, since the development of production logistics starts late, most managers from those enterprises pay less attention to shop logistics management as well. Thus, at present, higher logistic cost, the overstocking of products being processed and lower delivery rate is very common. Therefore, it is required to take effective and reasonable measures for workshop facilities planning and design to optimize production logistics and the working environment. In this way, the operating efficiency would be improved a lot and the logistics cost would be reduced to the largest degree, leading to more profits for the company in the end.This paper studies the workshop in YiHui hardware company. Two main steps are taken as follows:firstly, it analyzes the characteristics of its varieties of small batch production mode and product process flow. Secondly, in order to research on the workshop facility layout based on the pattern of many varieties of small batch production, this paper focuses on two aspects, both logistics and human perspectives, to describe the problems existing in the current facilities planning and design. These problems include too long logistics route, the overstocking of products being processed, too much work load and unreasonable work position for workers, etc.Then, to solve these problems, firstly, this paper divides the workshop into several operation departments based on different processes, and applies the system facilities planning layout method (SLP) into logistics analysis and correlation analysis between different operation departments. Thus, a feasible facilities planning and design is determined through the position relationship figures between operation departments. Secondly, it introduces the man-machine engineering design method and the human body size data to determine the area demand of every operation department, and tries to design the workplace in each small part. Finally, by combining the specific situation of the workshop and various factors which also influence the facilities’planning and design, it comes up with the optimized scheme. In the meanwhile, according to the quantitative evaluation criteria, it proves the reasonableness and effectiveness of this new plan in comparing with the primary one.
