With the rapid development of economy and the continuous improvement of people’s living standards, the number of cars has grown fast in China, which leads to serious traffic problems, waste of resources and environmental pollution while facilitating people’s daily lives. It seems that it does not always work well to solve such problems in modern society by either delimiting the increase of cars or expanding the road network. However, as the intelligent traffic system based mainly on the real-time traffic information system develops, it has provided an efficient way to solve traffic problems. A real-time traffic information system plays an important role of providing real-time traffic conditions and dynamic navigation for traffic flow, which can reduce greatly many problems such as traffic jams, environmental pollution and waste of resources. It also provides users with traffic information services which greatly facilitating the user’s travel.This paper focuses on the traffic information distribution system which is an important part of the real-time traffic information system. It is composed by traffic information distribution server and terminal devices. The former is responsible for responding to the requests from terminal device and sending traffic information to the users. The latter could be a smart phone, tablet computer, navigator and some other devices. Terminal device is responsible for receiving, processing the traffic information and displaying it on the screen to provide users with convenient traffic information services. Since TPEG protocol is applied here, this paper provides a detailed analysis of its structure and characteristics as well as the expression of traffic information based on it. Based on this, the traffic information distribution system is designed to deal with the requests submitted by terminals and then send back the relative traffic information. This paper also designs the mobile terminal application software on Android platform which can decode the traffic information based on TPEG, then process the traffic information and display it on the screen of terminals, can also response to user’s operations.Finally, we make a testing of the traffic information distribution system. Test results show that the traffic information distribution system presented in this paper can work properly. The traffic information distribution server can promptly respond to the requests from the terminal device and properly return the corresponding traffic information. The terminal device can process and display traffic information to provide users with comprehensive and convenient travel services.
