With the rapid development of China’s economy since the reformand open policy, Chinese people’s living standards has been improveda lot. At the same time, Chinese people are paying more and moreattention to the improving quality of the living environment. For along time, because of the few influence of classical gardens on thenorth, in addition to the limited absorbance of western modern andcontemporary landscape philosophy, the landscape building capabilityin northern China’s cold area are relatively low. The landscapedesigner lack of deep knowledge and study strategies on thespecialties of the winter landscape building in cold area, and thetheories in this field are still to be better. There is no oneadvanced rule or reference complying with local climate, social,economic, and cultural characteristics of the residential landscapebuilding in winter, especially for the study of it in the long coldwinter.Based on the practical investigation and analysis by the writerover China’s cold residential district, this paper is divided intofour chapters to discuss the related theory. The first chapter isthe introduction giving a detailed introduction about the researchbackground, purpose, significance, research scope and subjects, thecontents and the feasibility,etc.of the winter landscape building;the second chapter analyzes the concepts and theories related thissubject, and gives the examples of the domestic and foreign typicalwinter landscape building styles.; the third chapter introduces thegeneral situation of China’s cold area in the field, based on the practical investigations over the space, security, tree species,facilities, pavement, public art, night landscape, water landscapeelements of winter landscape in China’s cold area, analyzes theweakness of China’s winter landscape building; the fourth chapterpresents six principles, eight approaches and five trends inbuilding residential winter landscape, setting a direction for andputting forward the advice on the study of residential winterlandscape in China’s cold area.
