Thousands of years of civilization in China originated in Yellow River basin,boundless expanse of the plateau loess gave birth to a strong culture.The defense of traditional settlements in the north of Shanxi Province area is unique representative of great quantities of vernacular architecture. It is not only carrying the information of political, economic structural in a specific historical period,but also Transfering the messages of establishing settlements joined garrison with defense in order to consolidate frontier.They are the important part of The Great Wall defense system, enclosed by walls line the body as a typical external image, resisting foreign invasionis and convenienting for offensive and defensive are of primary condition to plan interior space.On account of Xinping Bao is located in the fortress of northeast defense in the north of Shanxi Province area,whose external and interior space reproduce completly the elegance of military settlement, called an outstanding paragon of this type of settlement.Xinping Bao was selected as the fifth batch of Historic and Culture Towns of China and the third group of Historic and Culture Towns in Shanxi Province.Xinpingbu has been recorded in the Zhou dynasty.It is distinguished by the military and flourished for commercial until the Ming and Qing Dynasty,which the development is from Qin, Han, Tang to Yuan dynasties.It is the best case of research on traditional military settlement and its culture due to rich resources in military, commercial, cultural field.The main object of this article is Xinping Bao of Tianzhen County in Datong City.On the one hand,we begin with collecting the information of natural background,to make preparation for research the location, construction technology, settlement building features by finding out geomorphology,traffic, economic and culture. On the other hand,we proceed from the information of historical background,to explore the characteristics of the layout of settlement,the regular pattern of spatial organization and the cause of prosperous trade.Finally,the article proposed tentatively methods and channels to protect development strategy of this area,explaining difficult but approachable concepts,step by step advance.Purpose is to provide new ideas about protective plan on traditional defensive military settlement and actual construction.During study,the author has not only adopted diverse basic methods of planning and architecture,but also utilized dynamic contrast and inductive analysis in statistics,combined with production of multi-disciplinary.From macro to micro,the research investigated systematically form characteristics of military settlement and traditional residences,packed up the traditional folk culture and historical sources,so as to contributed precious resources for inherit Chinese traditional culture.
