Both New And Old:Study On The Use Of Old Materials In Wangshu’s Architectural Creation

Architect Wangshu wins people’s praise and academic attention by his distinctive design works and clear-cut ideas, young architects and students seek after and even worship him. Meanwhile, Wangshu has also being given quite a little criticism, critics think that his practices are some kind of small minority cultures and fluffs that have no promotional value.Wangshu received modern architecture education and his works also originate from modern architecture. But we can see his rebel image from every aspects of his works. Wangshu’s dedication makes his works distinctive and different from the features of usual modern architecture,"both new and old", both modern and traditional. Wangshu’s practices are beneficial, it inspired the author’s research on his works and design ideas with the background of lacking architecture cultural character and sense of place now in china. The study focused on Wangshu’s methods of using old materials to express his design ideas and the vital role of old materials in his works.The project is divided into5research parts.1. Analysing the influence of Wangshu’s "re-enter the natural philosophy" design idea on his architectural creation, generalizing the main features of Wang Shu’s works and materials’ usage, making a deep analysis in Wangshu’s motives towards old materials’ usage.2. Classifying and organizing the old materials in Wangshu’s works and making a general characterization of its kinds, processing and using places.3. Studying the relationship between the old materials in Wangshu’s works and the Natural philosophy, expliciting the role of old materials in interpreting and expressing Wangshu’s composing ideas.4. Exploring the methods in shaping the "both New and Old" image of Wangshu’s works by using them, studying its correlations with design elements such as the Volume, Facade composition and Experience.5.
