Houses with courtyards are the traditional classical Chinese dwelling style and the ideal places for traditional Chinese to live in. As a space organization method, courtyards have threefold attributes:overlap of activities, fuzziness of functions (fuzzy boundary between private and open spaces), and penetrability of landscape. These space attributes can promote members of big families or modern neighbors to contact with each other and to take part in common activities. In recent years, housing in cities trends to be high-density and a large number of low-density houses with courtyards, mostly owned by elite class, are located at outskirts with wonderful natural landscape. However, endless high-density housings, mainly consisting of high-rise buildings, stand in the central area of cities. Living in this closed housing environment, residents can seldom experience the humanistic care from neighbors and seldom enjoy the spiritual experience of feeling nature. Therefore, we need to explore high-density courtyard housing, which is nearer to the requirement of common people. Of course, our exploration is not to copy traditional courtyards onto high-rise buildings, but to structure differently according to the same essence and to recover the space spirit and connotation of traditional courtyards.Based on reading a flood of literature and practical information, taking the method of example demonstration, this article analyzes and refines the space model of traditional courtyards, finds out the correlation between traditional courtyards and the "courtyard-like" form in high-density housing, and generalizes three "courtyard-like" versions for high-density housing-exclusive courtyards, sharing courtyards, and compound courtyards both exclusive and sharing. And it also explores the future development of high-density courtyard housing-pay more attention to low-rent housing or government-subsidized housing, and multi-dimensional high-density courtyard housing.
