The Research On The Traditional Courtyard Space In The View Of Modern Culture

Traditional courtyard is the essence of traditional Chinese architecture, and is also one of its most important features. As a well-known architectural space, it is widely used in a variety of architectural practice in thousands of years of development progress. In the same time, the traditional courtyard has always been permeated with the eternal theme of man and nature. We can see numerous vivid sketches about the courtyard which people drew in numerous classical poems, articles and paintings since ancient times. This not only reflects the courtyard profound impact on people's lives, but also reflects, most people have their own yard complex. Therefore, traditional courtyard is not only a kind of architectural spaces, it is also a cultural carrier which reveals the courtyard's charm and features which are based on the form of courtyard to people.Nevertheless, with the modern socio-economic development and the rapid increase of population, the city become more and more crowded in the progress of expansion, the development model of urban form has evolved from horizontal into vertical. People adapt to the urban form which is posed by the viaduct and the high-rise buildings gradually. At the same time, they also adapt to the intense pace of life and the compact living environment, and their lifestyle has been changed naturally. Therefore, the traditional courtyard culture is farther and farther away from people's lives. In order to create a more pleasant living environment and sustained-release the enormous pressure of life in a modern metropolis, it is an urgent need to create their own courtyard complex. However, the courtyard type is a product of the traditional lifestyle, how to use the courtyard culture which is the essence of tradition to create a more pleasant living environment under the premise of contemporary lifestyle has become an urgent issue.It is with this background, this paper attempts to conclude and discriminate the form constitution and design language of traditional courtyard space by analyzing the definition, characteristics and role of a series of natural attributes of traditional courtyard. The paper also attempts to explore how to change the mechanism of traditional courtyard to combine with modern architectural design.The paper describes the space feature, origin, development and the connotation of Philosophy and Culture of traditional courtyard based on its definition. And the paper also describes the role of courtyard space played in the traditional architecture. Based on the research results of pioneer architects internal and abroad on traditional architecture, traditional courtyard, landscape architecture and other relative theories, the main part of the article detailedly elaborated the form constitution of traditional courtyard, the relationship between the courtyard and the ancient urban planning and the features of courtyard design language. Accordingly, the article also analyzes some well-known modern architecture cases which stand for the combination of traditional and modern. And thus it takes some discussion on how to change the mechanism of traditional courtyard to root in the modern design. The ending part analyzes the advantages and the limitations of traditional courtyard space objectively, sums up its universal significance and value, as well as the guiding significance of exploring the combination of traditional and modern architecture on the epistemology and methodology.
