With the continuous growth of highway operating mileage, the contradiction between traffic demand and traffic safety increases sharply, cause the highway traffic accident frequency.Brittleness is a basic feature of complex systems. When one subsystem of a complex system suffers internal and external interference in some degree, the subsystem will lose its original function and collapse. Accidents are easy to happen in highway system when it suffers from internal and external interference in certain degree. And the subsystem of the highway system may collapse even lose its normal function. Therefore, highway accidents are the reflection of highway brittleness is excited.The entity and fuzzy periphery of highway system constitute the highway multidimensional periphery together which defense the normal operation of the highway system and achieve normal exchange between system and the outside. Therefore, starting from the accident of highway system, this article researched of highway brittleness based on periphery theory and brittleness theory. To sum up, the paper has following aspects:(1) This paper analyzed the existing of the brittleness of complex systems and highway systems, studied entropy theory, analyzed that the subsystem which was affected by the collapse subsystem needs to obtain negative entropy from outside when it wants to recover.Thus, with the help of the defense and exchange interaction of the highway periphery, we can introduce negative entropy flow to offset the increase of its entropy and try hard to eliminate the danger of highway system collapse. At the same time, the paper illustrated the rationality of using periphery theory to study brittleness theory is reasonable.(2) Through the clear understanding of the periphery theory, the paper demonstrated the real existence of entity and fuzzy periphery, researched the entity periphery parameters, and cleared the highway multidimensional periphery’s defence and exchange principle. In combination with second law of thermodynamics and brittle theory, the paper demonstrated the internal entropy increase of the highway system is the destroying process of internal ordered structures, the highway periphery try its best to prevent the damage, the negentropy enter the system from the gate of periphery to against the action of highway brittleness, to avoid the brittleness of highway system is excited.(3) Starting from the highway incidents to establish the brittleness model of highway incidents. The paper researched the structure of brittleness, cleared the action principle of highway brittle factors and establishes the vulnerability classification principle. By analyzing the influence factors of highway incidents, the model of highway brittleness excited defense periphery based on highway incidents was built. Taking the model parameters as quantitativeindicators, the main brittle factors were identified by analyzing quantization parameter of the excited defense status. Thus, the highway periphery could be reinforced fundamentally which points the direction of highway security management.
