An airborne Ad Hoc Network is a distributed self-organizing and multiple hop network where aircrafts in flight can communicate with each other just by its own communication equipment. It’s an application of mobile Ad Hoc Network in the field of aviation. Thanks to the use of Airborne Ad Hoc Network technology, aircraft s in a certain range are able to establish a network and communicate with each other. This network can completely get rid of the dependence on fixed infrastructure, and significantly improve aircraft’s navigation freedom, which makes a great difference in the fields of both civil and military aviation. At present, network architecture in mobile Ad Hoc Network is either flat structure or clustering structure, but in some special scenarios, neither of them can meet the demand. This thesis introduces a hierarchical Airborne Ad Hoc Network which is organized by the aircrafts according to their different missions. In such an architecture there are two types of networks, backbone and subnet. Aircrafts belong to a same team are organized in a same subnet, while backbone is composed of some aircrafts with special function, playing a support role in the architecture by connecting subnets which are located in different places. The node which can connect backbone and subnet is cal ed gateway, and the communication between subnets relies on gateways.Traditional protocols can’t work well in this new Airborne Ad Hoc Network, so this thesis comes up with one new. The new routing protocol consists of three parts, subnet internal routing, export gateway routing, and gateway_to_dest routing, which are used to deal with different stages of data transmission. The three parts are all provoked on demand, taking the shortest end to end delay principle and established by flood convergence. Working with the backbone network routing, this routing protocol can connect the whole network, providing a unicast transmission path between any two nodes. At last, the effectiveness of the subnet routing protocol is proved by network simulation. The result shows that the subnet routing protocol can adapt to the special Airborne Ad Hoc Network in this thesis and can cope with the rapid changing topology at a very low cost, guaranteeing the data transmission between any nodes in the network.
