It is the fast development of economy and the progress of the society that promote the rapid development of packaging industry, also bring a series of negative issues, such as environmental pollution and resource waste. At the same time, the advent of the era of information age and experience, the traditional single function of packaging cannot meet the multiple needs of consumers, so that the product packaging needs improvement and innovation. In view of the above problems, this paper puts forward the follow-up function of packaging design research aiming at resolving the existing shortage of the packaging industry a few days ago, and tries to relieve the contradiction between people and environment to some extent, and benefit for the user and the enterprise through the research on follow-up function of packaging.This paper firstly illustrates the necessity of the design for packaging follow-up function that provides a theoretical basis for this study through the analysis of the related concepts of sustainable design, green packaging design and consumers’ psychological state. Secondly, the concepts of the follow-up function of packaging design and packaging design are interpreted step by step; On this basis, the subsequent function of product packaging has been carried on the preliminary classification three categories:auxiliary function, recycling function, collection function.Then according to these three categories, they are subdivided anddemonstrated with design cases. At the end,this paper proposes the three design principles based on user mental behavior, designer guide and the new using of technology, design method and design problems should be paid attention to.Taking the sustainable development as the instruction, around people’s growing material and cultural needs, and combined with ergonomics, human behavior and other knowledge of related disciplines,this paper has a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the follow-up function of packaging design, in order to provide a new way of thinking and exploration perspective for packaging researchers.
