Interpreting The Expression Of "Provisionality" Ideology In Toyo Ito’s Works

Toyo Ito is one of the most important Japanese contemporary architects who awarded the 2013 Pritzker Architecture Prize. In the words of the Pritzker jury, "...Ito is a creator of timeless buildings." Throughout the whole architectural creation career of Toyo Ito, his architecture style looks different. But if his architectural thought and works are analyzed deeply and sorted out systematically, it will be found that they have a relatively clear development skeleton.In this thesis, the author is going to choose Ito’s design ideology of "provisionality" as the starting point, combining with the background of era development, divide the development course of Ito’s "provisionality" ideology into three main stages and expound them respectively. And on this basis, the "provisionality" expression in his works is explained deeply on the both levels of architectural elements (micro level) and whole architecture (macro level), in order to understand how Ito expressed his design ideology through the way of architectural design.In chapter 1, the research background is presented, and Ito’s ideology of "provisionality" is definited as the research object and its expression in his works is the major studying content. Also, the domestic and foreign research actuality of Ito is summarized.In chapter 2, Ito’s ideology of "provisionality" is expounded:firstly, the source of Ito’s "provisionality" will be summarized; and then, on basis of the above, the ideology of "provisionality" can be interpreted as "light & swift", "vagueness" and "life attribute" successively, according to the different phases of the era development.Then, chapter 3 and chapter 4 are the focuses of this thesis. The ideology of "provisionality" expounded in chapter 2 becomes a starting point, in the both levels of architectural elements (micro level) and whole architecture (macro level), according to the practical significance of "provisionality" ideology and related content, the expression of "provisionality" ideology in Ito’s works is sorted out and interpreted. And finally, in conclusion, the ideology of "provisionality" will be summarized, which is expected to bring some inspiration to Chinese contemporary architectural creation.
