Shanxi, known as "Museum of Ancient Art of China", is one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. It has a long history, rich cultural heritage, and not only retains 70% of ancient buildings of all the nation, but also traditional mural painting, statue. Gilding techniques not only play a decorative role, but also can protect the precious cultural heritage from the wear and tear. In this paper, Shanxi traditional gilding techniques were historically and systematically explored using historical documents examination, oral interviews, in combination with field visits methods.And this study will help people get a better understanding of the traditional gilding techniques, to some extent, compensate the historical scarce vacancies of traditional gilding techniques.The full text is divided into four parts. In the first three parts, using oral history method, based on the interviews of the four gild master, we summarized the specific processes, described the detailed characteristics of the different gilding techniques, especially the application of gilding techniques in murals and we cited the main types of Shanxi traditional gilding techniques. In the forth part, we analyzed the current situation of the traditional gilding techniques in Shanxi, and cited the existing forms and problems of the traditional gilding techniques. In combination with the experience of protecting intangible cultural heritage, some constructive advices on protecting and inheriting Shanxi traditional gilding techniques are brought forward from the following three perspectives:completing relevant policies and laws, creating an ecological industrial chain of Shanxi traditional gilding techniques and promoting the team construction of inheritors.
