The development of nuclear power is an important part of the new energy development strategy in the nation. Up to now, the number of nuclear power plants both under construction and in plan reaches hundreds of seats. With the development of nuclear power projects, the quantity of radioactive waste produced annually is also very large. Through on-site research in Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant (QNPP),it is found that the QNPP waste transit storage is about to reach its load limit. Although part of the waste temporarily stored has exceeded the design time limit, it has not got timely disposal. Therefore, the radioactive waste management in QNPP is facing greater pressure. To solve these problems, this paper first conducted a literature and field research of radioactive waste management in abroad (mainly refers to France and the United States) which enjoy nuclear power plants. Then, it summed up the successful experiences of radioactive waste management in above two countries. At the same time, the paper made an analysis and a contrast on management status of radioactive waste in nuclear power plants from both domestic and abroad. Subsequently, in accordance with the specific problems existing in QNPP, a specialized management program was proposed, that is introducing a specialized radioactive waste management company to participate waste management in QNPP. Under the supervision of QNPP, the specialized company is responsible for managing of all radioactive waste treatment facilities, primary conditioning of the solid waste produced yet not immobilized and newly produced by utilizing the waste treatment facilities currently existing, as well as transport and further treatment and disposal of the waste with large volume reduction. By this way, utilization efficiency of radioactive waste treatment system in QNPP will be improved, the requirements of radioactive waste treatment and disposal will be came true, and the waste management pressure the base facing will be effectively reduced. In conclusion, it is much essential to explore professional management mode and treatment technology for radioactive waste from nuclear power plant, and the relevant research results will provide a reference for nuclear power plant both in construction and in plan.
