Regionalism is now very popular in the design of urban public spaces in China. However, when it comes to practice, landscape architects are likely to design the spaces into landmarks or symbolic spaces. Their understanding of regionalism is still focusing on transforming the traditional culture elements into abstract symbols, or imitating the traditional styles and forms. In addition, they put more emphasis on memorial landscape design rather than humanization landscape design. As a result, citizens do not tend to stay on the so-called ’regional’ urban public spaces.During the studying period as an exchange student in Taiwan, the author has improved the understanding of real regional practice form local practice in Taiwan. The architects who are practicing locally take local residents ’feelings and real needs into consideration. Their design of regional urban public spaces aims to provide a place where people are willing to stay for a long time. In this case, people can improve their understanding of local culture through their perception of local geographical representation. In this article, the author use the ’human, place, time’ form the Taiwanese local practice as three factors to make the framework of regional urban spaces in Taiwan. They include the space design and detail design, and the image design which people can sense the nature and culture identity of the place.
